April Focus - Addiction
For the month April Empowering You Kinesiology is focussing on ADDICTION.
Now that Easter is over and we’ve all had our fill of chocolate eggs, hot cross buns and maybe a few beverages over the long weekend I wanted to have a conversation about the difference between indulgence and addiction.
- thing that is indulged in; a luxury
- the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance or activity
In our country we are truly blessed and have so many things to indulge in that it is easy to take these too far and create addictions. Addiction is
when we no longer have the choice to indulge or not. We become driven by the particular substance or activity. Addiction can be associated only
with alcohol, drugs and sex but we need to be aware of the many other addictions that are affecting many of us that are much easier to deny and
disguise - shopping, sugar and shoes…..
Scott Pape in his book - The Barefoot Investor says:
“Using willpower to force yourself to stick to a rigid budget, day in and day out, just doesn’t work.”
“In fact, it’s the opposite”
“If you really want to win, you should ditch tracking everything and instead simplify your choices.”
Scott is talking about financial budgets but this applies to sugar budget, food budget, shoe budget anything really. If all it took was ‘willpower’ you would of already achieved your goal because your desire is there. The problem is when you are on a strict sugar diet for example all you think about is sugar, sugar, sugar and actually becomes a focus.
‘Willpower’ alone doesn’t work.
This is because until you have looked at the ‘WHY’ part of your addiction the drive will continue to be there.
Kinesiology will help you get to your underlying ‘why’. What caused us to have a need to create an addiction. Most times the ‘why’ is completely unrelated to the addiction itself. Once we work out the ‘why’ we can “simplify your choices”.
Addiction - It’s all about the ‘WHY’
