Christmas Joy!

This year has been full of change, stress and sanitation so let’s take this opportunity to remind ourselves that Christmas is about Family, Friends, Making Memories and Joy.

Let’s say “no” to the way our commercial world has turned Christmas into a gift focussed, credit card using, decoration overloaded gimmick. All done with the message that these “things” will make you happy.

A friend of mine shared with me a quote he had recently come across:

“Comparison is the thief of Joy”

Just repeat that a couple of times to yourself!

“Comparison is the thief of Joy”

  • Who’s got the best lights in your street?
  • Who’s bought their kids the biggest trampoline for Christmas?
  • Who has the most family over to celebrate?
  • Who is being the most generous with end of year Teacher gifts?

These are just a few of the things we can ponder over and overthink. Comparing ourselves to others is something we tell our kids not to do on nearly a daily basis. You know the conversation, “Everyone else is doing it…..” and “If they were all jumping off a cliff would you do that too?” But how often do we consider how we compare ourselves to our peers.

You could be feeling so excited about taking the kids camping for the holidays and then see a friend’s post on Facebook about them heading to Fiji to take the kids to explore the world. All of a sudden you could feel lame or poor or that your denying your kids of cultural experiences, all because you compared what you’re doing to someone else.

Do you know what all kids love for Christmas?

Quality time with you. Your undivided attention. Do you think they care if you do that while camping at the beach in beautiful sunny Queensland or staying in a resort in beautiful sunny Fiji? Nup!

So don’t let comparison steal your joy this Christmas season! Joy is a deep emotion that is not restricted to only happiness but can also be felt in times of suffering and sorrow. Joy is the knowing that life is always good even when it seems hard, bad or sad.

Let’s all focus on Christmas Joy this year!
